Growing a Farmer Post #2

Growing a Farmer had a great storyline. At the start of his book, Kurt gave his story of transferring his city life to a farm life. What I really enjoyed about Kurt was his ambition and dedication to learning as he went along. He knew his passion was to live on a farm and produce his own food, however he started with very little knowledge. The whole middle of this book, Kurt would explain his different endeavors and, at the end of every chapter, he learned a little more about himself and farming. He was able to take his business knowledge as a restaurant owner and apply that to his farm, as he explained in the last two chapters of his novel. I particularly really liked the last two chapters because he wrapped everything up so nicely. He learned what worked and what didn't through trial and error and new the most profitable thing to sell was cheese. Cheesemaking is what helped him create a sustainable and somewhat profitable farm; if it wasn't for his craft of cheese, he would have probably had to move back into the city.
Kurt has given me a new perspective on food. Reading about how Kurt was able to raise, slaughter, and butch an animal really made me think about all the meat I have eaten and how it ended up on my plate. Kurt showed us all this with graphic details, not to scare us away or feel sorrowful, as he mentioned, but to feel gratified when eating it, knowing all the hard work brought to raising that animal. Kurt, selflessly, wanted to share his good quality of food with his neighbors and those in the city, always welcoming others on his farm. Every Sunday, he would prepare a farm food dinner, sharing the foods that were grown on the land. Kurt has felt as if he reached his goal and fulfilled his passion.
